Presentation:

IQ, EQ and Rational Preferences.

Presenter: Dr Quang Nguyen2

School of Business, University of Middlesex, London

Abstract:

We investigate whether cognitive ability (IQ) and emotional balance (EQ) meaningfully impact risk preference and time preference, finding solid evidence in support. Specifically, those with higher levels of IQ and EQ have preferences that are arguably more rational. In the realm of risk taking, high-IQ subjects tend to be risk-neutral expected utility maximizers. Moreover, again more consistent with rationality, high-EQ individuals are less subject to present (or future) bias, and they are more patient. Importantly, these sensitivities are almost entirely present for males and not females. While the recent spate of research on the impact of cognitive ability on preferences is commendable, our results suggest that more research on the role played by emotional balance is in order.
