Presentation: Backward Spillover from Different FDI Origins: The Role of Geographical Distance and Technology Intensity of Input Consumption

Author: Dr. Pham Thi Bich Ngoc, Hoa Sen University, HCMC

Presenter: Dr. Pham Thi Bich Ngoc1, HSU

Abstract

By using a firm-level data set from 23 Vietnamese manufacturing sectors in the period 2007-2010, this paper aims at analyzing the difference in backward spillovers from FDI to domestic suppliers and find that input linkages to indigenous firms are likely to increase with the distance between the host and the source economy. In addition, FDI from a source country tend to have input linkages with domestic low-tech industries. By setting up an indicator to measure technology intensity of foreign investment from one origin, we find evidence that FDI from the origin that the investors demand more low-tech products possibly bring higher potential of backward spillovers to local suppliers
